WILDLIFE
An important area for the protection of two of Australia’s vulnerable species such as Australian humpback dolphins (Sousa sahulensis) and dugongs (Dugong dugon), Hervey Bay and the Great Sandy Strait sustain foraging and hunting, as well as breeding and birthing for these species.
Situated at the mouth of the Mary River, the area is a transition zone between temperate and tropical ecosystems. The entire area is protected under the Great Sandy Marine Park and boasts a variety of natural habitats including mangroves, rocky shores, pristine sandy beaches, islands, endemic forest, sand banks, mud flats, rock pools and salt marshes.
Aboard the Hervey Bay Nature Cruise, you’re in for a treat. A plethora of wildlife call this habitat home, and our guides will help spot, point out, and maintain respectful distance to the many animals you might see on your ecotour. You never know what you may see on an Hervey Bay excursion! During the warmer months – between December and May – an abundance of marine life call this area home.
