Pacific Whale Foundation Eco Adventures Australia (PWFEAA) is a subsidiary of the international NGO Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF). With a mission to protect the ocean through science and advocacy, and inspire environmental stewardship, Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) conducts Research, Education and Conservation programs for the communities in which it serves. Founded by Greg Kaufman in 1980 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation dedicated to saving the world’s whales from extinction, PWF has now grown into a social enterprise that offers fee-based programs and services through Pacific Whale Eco-Adventures to help fund its nonprofit work. Combined with memberships, donations, charitable grants and a remarkable group of dedicated volunteers, PWF now reaches more than 400,000 individuals each year through its Maui and Queensland operations along with research projects in Ecuador and Chile.

Position Description –    Captain, Pacific Whale Foundation Eco Adventures Australia P/L 

Location –                          Hervey Bay, Queensland Australia

Base –                                 Shop 1, Great Sandy Straits Marina, Buccaneer Drive, Urangan 4655

Employment Basis –         Full-time or part-time also available for longer term opportunity / OR Contract Period, July to October

Hours –                               As required on a 7-day roster

Reports to –                      Eco Tours Manager

SUMMARY

The Captain reports to the Eco Tours Manager under the company structure. The Captain is responsible for the safe navigation and proper operation of the vessel, ensuring a safe environment for all passengers as per the requirements of AMSA and PWFEAA. The Captain delivers high quality service ensuring an outstanding passenger experience throughout the company’s cruises.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Candidates must have the ability and commit to:

  • Minimum qualifications issued by AMSA of Coxswain Grade 1 NC and MED 3
  • A complete and thorough knowledge of the Fraser Coast waterways
  • Experience in operating marine mammal viewing cruises
  • A complete knowledge of the applicable regulations governing operation of whale watching cruises and Marine Park operation
  • Experience in operating high-speed RIB vessels
  • A thorough understanding of the operation and maintenance of the vessel and its systems to the extent relevant to the duties required, necessary to ensure prompt, effective and reliable operation and maintenance at time of need
  • An understanding and commitment to the company’s mission.

Responsibilities

People Management & Leadership 

  • Ensure effective recruiting, hiring, onboarding, professional development, performance management and retention of marine staff
  • Identify and develop staff for leadership succession planning
  • Support the team to achieve results, striking an effective balance between results achieved and engagement and retention; establish and maintain a respectful and inclusive work environment where team members thrive, and organizational outcomes are met
  • Ensure optimal staffing and workload allocation
  • Understand and demonstrate core values of transparency, respect and integrity
  • Work collaboratively with Eco tour staff to ensure smooth day to day operations

General Responsibilities 

  • Build and maintain a team culture focused on outstanding customer service that goes beyond friendly and helpful, but prides itself on going above-and-beyond, thinking about a customer’s experience from beginning to end
  • Assign team member duties and following up on work results
  • Motivate team members to sell retail products and memberships, maintain solid product knowledge, and all other aspects of customer service including promotion of various ecotours
  • Create/submit weekly work schedules; approve/deny time off requests based on operational needs; review/approve timesheets every two weeks
  • Create/deliver store supply orders as required with approval from the Eco Tours Manager
  • Maintain cleanliness of the vessel and products
  • Ensure staff remains knowledgeable about PWF’s mission, goals, objectives, company structure, programs, etc. to aid in answering customer questions and directing sales
  • Coordinate and execute special events as required
  • Ensure recycling of all excess packing materials
